What you need to do is download the latest LTS version of Ubuntu Server, install it on your old computer and run some commands via SSH. This is where Ubuntu Server comes in handy. But if you plan on keeping a continuously running computer then it’s better to go with an installation that doesn’t tax your system. You could have the usual Windows, macOS, or Linux running on them and you’ll be fine. There are two ways we can go about setting an old computer as a Plex Server. I already had a laptop that was over 5 years old so I went with the latter. This could be a NAS or a repurposed computer. To set up our Plex Server we need central storage, one that could run 24/7. Plex is a great way to have all your media files organized and ready for access whenever you need them, both in and outside your network. Don’t forget to turn on SSH and SMB (optional). Upon first boot you’ll be asked to sign in to your WiFi along with a few other things. The Pi will boot up once you’ve plugged in your USB-C cable. In case you’re wondering, the red wire goes in pin 4 (+5V) and the black in pin 6 (ground). Fix your heatsink on the processor of the Raspberry Pi board and install your casing with your cooling fan. Now we can run it and see if our Raspberry Pi works fine. Once you’ve downloaded and installed the software, Choose the latest version of LibreELEC under “Operating System”, the microSD under “Storage” and write. This will make things a little bit easy for us. Plug in your microSD card to your computer and go to Raspberry Pi’s official website to download the Raspberry Pi Imager. You can go with any OS as long as it supports Kodi (almost all of them do). But for our purposes, we will use LibreELEC, a fully-fledged Kodi OS. There are quite a few Operating Systems you could go with. Next, we need to have a working OS for the Raspberry Pi. You can easily find these at any store that sells Raspberry Pi’s. You will be running the Pi for long durations and although it’s not a power hungry device, it will still heat up and will be prone to dust. I also recommend buying a case and some cooling components like a cooling fan and heatsinks. Internationally, you can buy one for less than $50. Also, 4K! Here in our part of the world, you can get a Pi 4 Model B 4GB for around LKR 12,000 – LKR 14,000. But the Pi 4 ships with more up-to-date hardware and improved performance. I recommend going for a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with at least 4GB RAM. We need to get our hands on a Raspberry Pi.

  • Working computer to perform all the operationsįirst things first.
  • It will all cost you less than LKR 25,000 ($125).

There are a few steps involved but essentially the end result will let you access all your movies, tv shows, music, and whatnot from one central location within your own network.

The idea was to build an inexpensive solution to store and organize all my media files and turn my regular LED TV into a smart one. Now, I finally found the time to build one for myself and thought it might be useful to pen it all down. I’ve been meaning to set up a home media center with a Raspberry Pi for a while.
